A new “Karate Kid” film starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio is coming to theaters in a year. The main actor is still being searched.

After the end of the Hollywood actors’ strike, a number of new projects have been announced in the past few days. One of them now brings together two different “Karate Kid” universes. The film studio Sony will bring a new “Karate Kid” film to US cinemas on December 13th next year. What’s special about it: original “Karate Kid” Ralph Macchio (62) and screen legend Jackie Chan (69) appear together in it.

Global search for a new Karate Kid

While Macchio played the character Daniel LaRusso in the films “Karate Kid” (1984), “Karate Kid II – Decision in Okinawa” (1986), “Karate Kid III – The Final Decision” (1989) and the Netflix revival series ” Cobra Kai” (since 2018), Chan played Mr. Han in the 2010 remake “Karate Kid”, a character based on the legendary Mr. Miyagi portrayed by Pat Morita (1932-2005). Now the two stars are in front of the camera together for the new, as yet untitled “Karate Kid” sequel.

Chan and Macchio announced the news on Tuesday, November 21st. in a YouTube video. At the same time, they started a worldwide search for a new Karate Kid with the clip. An actor aged 15 to 17, who is of Chinese descent but can speak English and has excellent fighting skills, is set to play the traditionally youthful lead role in the upcoming film.

It is still unclear whether other characters in the film series such as Will Smith’s (55) son Jaden Smith (25) from the “Karate Kid” remake in 2010 or “Cobra Kai” protagonist and “Karate Kid” villain William Zabka ( plays Johnny Lawrence, 58) will appear in the new part. According to information from US industry website “Variety” Jonathan Entwistle (“The End of the F***ing World”, 39) directs the cult film sequel based on a script by Rob Lieber (“Peter Hase”, 47). Further details about the plot are currently unknown.
