Munich today – News from October 4th, 2022 – Munich

The days have become significantly cooler, the nights even more so. Or to put it in the words of Markus Söder: winter is coming. And with it many things that you would normally look forward to, such as Christmas. But in view of the current crises, it may be difficult to feel at home this year. Above all, the worry about energy consumption is depressing. How high should you turn up the heating, how hot should you shower and wouldn’t candles be a better alternative to artificial light in winter? It’s not just about the fear of a so-called blackout, but also about the skyrocketing prices that many people are already unable to cope with.

The city of Munich is also trying to save energy long before the nationwide ordinance that has officially come into force on September 1st. The goal of operating the Munich city administration in a climate-neutral manner by 2030 has led to a reduction in heat consumption there by 29 percent to date. But the city is also pulling the energy emergency brake in other places. For example, the Dantebad, known as the winter warm outdoor pool, remains temporarily closed, fountains are switched off, as are the night lights in many places.

So how cold and dark will it be, the winter in Munich? My colleague Thomas Start looked at how the city is trying to keep energy consumption and costs as low as possible, and what effects these measures could have on the lives and everyday lives of Munich residents (SZ Plus). One thing should be anticipated: there will also be an illuminated Christmas tree on Marienplatz this year. So that the homely feeling may still set in for one or the other.
