Munich today – News from June 30th, 2022 – Munich

When it comes to how the public sector burns money through breakdowns and delays in the planning of a major project, an abbreviation has stuck in this country: BER. The code of Berlin’s major airport has become synonymous with the fact that many things go terribly wrong over a long period of time, in the end everything becomes much more expensive and yet only works tolerably well. The abbreviation BER was often used in Munich on Thursday. Because in the city, which is so proud that so many things work so well in it, an infrastructure disaster is looming that could even overshadow BER.

The costs for the second S-Bahn main route explode. From the calculated 3.8 billion euros, they should increase to 7.2 billion euros. And the first trains are not supposed to roll through the tunnel in 2028, as planned, but only in 2037 – that would be twenty years after the start of construction. All of this was calculated by the Bavarian Ministry of Transport, which is closely involved in the project, but apparently has no insight from Deutsche Bahn as to exactly how the construction is progressing. The federal government is to assume 60 percent of the costs. Its transport minister, Volker Wissing (FDP), but lets a long-term crisis summit on the subject burst in the short term. A completely “failed planning”, as my colleague Andreas Schubert comments.

The whole process is memorable, it will not only occupy Munich for a long time. The second regular route is not just a huge infrastructure project (SZ Plus). It is intended to bring the chronically congested S-Bahn the urgently needed relief, without which the much-vaunted turnaround in traffic cannot succeed. Without them, Munich will never achieve its climate goals. That’s why there’s more to the city than BER.
