Munich today – news from July 13th, 2022 – Munich

Almost a year and a half ago there was a fire in the Studentenstadt, in house 13. What exactly started the fire has not yet been clarified. What is known, however, is that it broke out in the basement, in a sauna, and that it had terrible consequences. On the fourth floor, a student was found in the hallway, she died as a result of smoke inhalation. The public prosecutor’s investigation is not yet complete.

The student town in Freimann, the Stusta, is the largest student settlement in Germany. The operator, the Munich student union, has had to think more about fire protection since the fire. Investigations into other dormitories yielded worrying-sounding results (SZ Plus). In the two largest Stusta houses, experts and the fire brigade found some significant deficiencies, which can be found in the internal documents of the student union. According to the fire brigade, the largest building with more than 600 apartments only just escaped eviction. And the basement bar Potschamperl, which is so popular with students, is said to have been operated for many years without a permit. The fire brigade called the fire protection deficiencies found in the low basement rooms “very critical”.

And what does the student union say about this? The managing director, who has been in office with a brief interruption since 2007, does not want to speak to the SZ. And your spokesman tries to calm you down: There was “at no time” a “considerable danger” for the tenants. “The well-being” of the residents is “always the top priority”. The fire protection in dormitories can be examined “continuously”. And anyway, when the houses in question were built, other specifications would have applied than today. There was grandfathering for further use.

Anyhow, in the meantime a possible danger in the two largest Stusta houses has been averted. They were emptied, one reason: deficiencies in fire protection. Nobody knows when the general renovation will begin, and certainly not when the dormitories can be occupied again. And so the problem of the student union is also a problem for many students who are waiting for an affordable room in Munich. More than 1200 residential places are probably empty for years. This is a disaster for the excellence university location of Munich, where the student union and the state government are anything but excellent.
