Munich today – News from December 9th, 2022 – Munich

You think you know some parts of the city without ever having been there. So many stories have been heard about it. The Hasenbergl is probably such a district. It’s a neighborhood that’s been struggling against the reputation that has stuck with it since its inception — and even before, in fact.

Because where the Hasenbergl is today, there was a camp after the Second World War. First for prisoners of war, refugees, former concentration camp inmates, Russians and Ukrainians in particular, then for Munich families who have become homeless and people who could not find accommodation anywhere else.

Today the Hasenbergl is a quarter in which the house of the rifle club with its maypole is right next to the mosque with its kebab shop. And down the street, Yusuf Han grills fish on a stick, always after Friday prayers.

You can read in our report (SZ Plus) why people love their district, what needs to change there and why everyone should go to the Hasenbergl.
