Again and again one hears or reads that allegedly rich people from Russia invest money in Munich houses. Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine, we in the Munich editorial team have wondered if there is any real estate in the city owned by oligarchs who have since been sanctioned. But my colleague Klaus Ott and I came across two villas, one in Haidhausen and one in Nymphenburg, which apparently have had little or no use for many years and which people from Russia own or have heard of – the villa in Haidhausen is the ownership structure is unclear. In this story (SZ Plus) we describe our search for clues and also go into why the city is finding it so difficult to take action against vacancies in such properties.
