Admittedly, one would not really expect that the tranquil Aubing has a bar that is worth mentioning. It seems a bit snored here, lots of row houses, a few shops, hardly a person on the street. But between the low buildings, in a building that is just as low, hides a bar that can proudly bear the title of neighborhood bar, which is sometimes wrongly suspected of being dishonorable. Because the Sir John at Altostraße 13 is exactly why, as a resident, you might get up from the couch in the evening and try to get around people: A meeting place for people from the area, without any fuss, but with fair ones Drink prices and a menu that is really impressive for the small shop.
Around 20 guests can be seated on the bar stools in the guest room, and owner Torsten John and his team always have five types of draft beer ready for them. The light is available for 3.70 euros, the König Ludwig wheat beer costs 3.90 euros like the dark wheat beer. If the normal beer is too boring for you, you can also switch to a Goaßmass, and for the very hard-boiled there is also a Laterndlmass made of white wine, Sprite and cherry liqueur. But the guests don’t just come here to drink: Because the Sir John offers various dishes for small and large appetites on a more or less daily changing menu. Pub classics such as currywurst and sausage salad can be found on it, as well as Rostbrastwürstl with bacon sauerkraut and even a game goulash. The prices for the dishes mentioned range between eight and 15 euros. And if you order the sausages or a portion of Emmentaler, Aubinger country bread will be served with it.
Owner and namesake Torsten John was looking for a place to relax
Sir John came about because owner and namesake Torsten John traveled a lot as a moving company. At the same time, he was looking for a place to relax from the many business trips, and because it should be something of his own, he opened his own restaurant without further ado. There is now a lot of football on the weekends – and if it’s the Champions or Euroleague also during the week – there is a lot of football. Which Munich club is preferred in Sir John can be determined with a quick glance at the beer glass at the next table, on which the FC Bayern logo is emblazoned.
But the Sir John isn’t just for football fans. Depending on the pairing, what happens on the big screen on the wall is often of secondary importance, rather it is about exchanging ideas and getting into conversation with one another. It’s quick, as a stranger you are greeted by the guests with “Servus!” greeted, and if you want, you can then join the conversation between waiters and guests – but you don’t have to. In general, everyone is welcome at Sir John, regardless of whether you just have a quick beer or order something to eat. And you don’t necessarily have to come from Aubing either. Usually hardly anyone from other quarters gets lost here – there is definitely a reason.
