Munich: successor for “Sedlmayr-Gaststätte” found – Munich

The large Munich restaurateurs Stephan and Sebastian Kuffler and their Kuffler Group will take over the “Beim Sedlmayr” inn on Westenriederstraße in the coming year. The tavern at the Viktualienmarkt, originally founded by popular actor Walter Sedlmayr and managed by cook and landlord Rudi Färber for a good 20 years, belongs to the Paulaner brewery.

The property, on the other hand, is privately owned and a general refurbishment of the property is scheduled for July 2024. It is expected to last a year and a half. Only last autumn did the brewery announce that TV chef Hans Jörg Bachmeier, who also runs the small restaurant “Bachmeiers Genussfreuden” on Westenriederstrasse, will continue to run the tavern together with the previous landlord Rudi Färber, 73, until the upcoming renovation .

Now the Kuffler Group is the new tenant of the restaurant. Negotiations have been in progress with the owner of the house for more than a year. The Kuffler Group includes the Seehaus in the English Garden, the Weinzelt at the Wiesn and the luxury hotel “München Palace”. An initial statement said that Sedlmayr would “first invest heavily”.

“The tavern has to undergo an extensive general renovation, which is estimated to take up to 18 months,” the Kufflers continued, “the house will be closed to guests for a correspondingly long time.” During the renovation, the restaurant will also be completely gutted and enlarged by 40 seats. The reopening will be celebrated at the beginning of 2026, but the new tenants promise that the inn will be visually recognizable. “Sedlmayr remains Sedlmayr,” says Sebastian Kuffler.

And Birgit Zacher, spokeswoman for the Paulaner brewery, says: “We have a very good partner in Hans Jörg Bachmeier, and we will have a good partner in Kuffler.” Paulaner still has the beer delivery rights for the restaurant. By the middle of next year, Zacher continues, they want to look for a new property for Bachmeier in order to continue the partnership.

The Kuffler Group thus once again has a classic Bavarian inn in its portfolio. During the corona pandemic, she had to give up the Haxnbauer at the Platzl. Extensive renovations are being carried out there as well; the Augustiner brewery will be the new tenant in the future.
