The strike of the train drivers’ union GDL will also restrict Deutsche Bahn traffic in Bavaria. The company announced on Tuesday that only about every fourth planned long-distance train will run and regional traffic will be severely restricted. Emergency schedules are in the works.
The deputy state chairman of the Pro Bahn passenger association, Lukas Iffländer, said: “It will probably hit the S-Bahn in Munich and Nuremberg.” He expects massive thinning, shortened routes and longer cycle times.
Every hour on the S-Bahn lines
The Munich MVV announced that during the strike in passenger traffic from Wednesday, two o’clock at night, until Friday morning, also two o’clock, the S-Bahn will run sharply reduced: “That corresponds to approximately one hour on all lines,” it says on the MVV website.
The subway, tram and buses in Munich and the MVV regional buses are not affected by this strike, but could be fuller than usual.
The Munich S-Bahn has drawn up a replacement schedule for the two days:
- the S 1 only runs between Leuchtenbergring and Freising (not to the airport) every 20 to 40 minutes.
- the S 2 runs in the outdoor areas every hour, between Dachau and Markt Schwaben every 20 to 40 minutes. Due to construction work, it does not stop in Poing and Heimstetten.
- the S 3 runs in the outdoor areas every hour, between Maisach and Ostbahnhof every 20 to 40 minutes.
- the S 4 runs every hour between Geltendorf and Haar, and every 20 to 40 minutes between Buchenau and Trudering.
- the S 6 runs every hour. Due to the construction, there are no intermediate stops between Berg am Laim and Grafing Bahnhof. It should be noted that construction work with replacement rail traffic is in progress on the S 4 and S 6 east.
- the S 7 runs every hour.
- the S 8 runs between Pasing and the airport every 20 minutes, in the western outer sections from and to Germering every 20 to 40 minutes and from and to Herrsching every 60 minutes.
- the S 20 not applicable.
The travel times of the S-Bahn can be found on the timetable information bahn.de or in Munich Navigator can be retrieved. Which trains run is also under bahn.de to find. The strike in passenger traffic ends on Friday morning at two o’clock. It cannot be ruled out that there will be further delays in train traffic afterwards.
Even private railways could be hindered
In regional traffic, private railways are on the move on many routes, which are not on strike by the GDL and are likely to be on the way according to the schedule. But if Deutsche Bahn dispatchers also go on strike, the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) could very well have train cancellations, the private railway company said.
The failure of many S-Bahn trains will probably lead to them being full and less punctual. It will probably hit Nuremberg hardest, because no private rail operators run regional traffic to Stuttgart, said Iffländer.
In comparison with other federal states, Bavaria has the advantage that Deutsche Bahn still has many officials on duty here who are not on strike.
In long-distance traffic, the DB wants to use long trains. The ICE between Nuremberg and Munich could possibly run every two hours.
