Munich: renovation of the Glyptothek is complete – Munich

After almost three years, the renovation of the Glyptothek has now officially been completed, as the Bavarian Ministry of Art announced on Sunday. The project cost 17 million euros – and thus stayed within budget and time frame.

The fact that Munich residents are missing their Glyptothek after years of closure was already evident during the long night of the museums in October – as you can see from the queue of people in this photo. At that time the building was not completely restored, but the exhibition of Greek and Roman sculptures had been open for a while.

The extensive renovation has only now officially been completed, as the Bavarian Ministry of Art announced on Sunday. The damage caused by the bombing raids of 1944 had to be repaired. The facade of the classicist Klenze building, designed in the style of a Greek temple, suffered badly at the time and was only poorly repaired in the post-war period. Now it has been renovated according to the original plans.

“With its world-class sculpture collection, the Glyptothek is one of the leading international museums for ancient art,” said Minister Bernd Sibler (CSU). “With a construction time of almost three years and a total budget of 17 million euros, the project stayed within budget and time frame and is therefore exemplary for a successful museum renovation”, praised Bavaria’s building minister Kerstin Schreyer (CSU).
