Munich man dies while ice climbing in the Alps – he triggered the avalanche himself – Munich

An ice climber from Munich was swept down by an avalanche in the Tyrolean mountains. The 33-year-old died in the accident in the Reutte area, while his 37-year-old Canadian companion survived with injuries, police announced on Monday.

The men had completed part of an ice climbing tour on the western Geierkopf near the Bavarian border on Sunday and walked through steep terrain to another climbing route. The 33-year-old probably started the avalanche, the police said.

Both alpinists fell into the depths. Since they were roped, their fall was stopped when the rope caught on a rock. But the younger of the two suffered fatal injuries. He died at the scene of the accident.
