Munich: Corona incidence doubles, situation in clinics critical – Munich

The number of officially reported corona cases in Munich doubled over the weekend compared to Friday. On Sunday the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported an incidence number of 248.4, on Friday it was still 124 according to official figures. But the new value is probably still far below the actual one.

“We are in a phase of exponential growth,” said a spokeswoman for the Munich health department on Sunday. The incidence “should now be around 500. It will take a few more days before the incidence is displayed correctly.”

Last Monday, the authority had to admit that the recently reported numbers are probably far too low because the employees of the department were no longer able to keep up with the registration. Since then, dozens of Bundeswehr employees have been helping out with the investigation. Health officer Beatrix Zurek (SPD) recently emphasized that the actual incidence in Munich could currently be well over 300.

Only 22 of 452 intensive care beds are still available

Meanwhile, the situation in the Munich hospitals is becoming more and more critical. According to the dpa, only 22 of the 452 intensive care beds were free on Sunday. “We get into an overload mode that can go on for months if we don’t do anything about it,” said Oliver Keppler, head of virology at Munich’s Ludwig Maximilians University, Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation.

From this Monday, November 15th, in view of the rapidly increasing number of infections in day-care centers, there will be no support in fixed groups. This was decided by the city staff for extraordinary events (SAE) under the direction of Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD). The requirement for the daycare centers also applies outside the regular opening hours in the so-called marginal times before 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m. For organizational reasons, there could be shortening of care times in the morning and evening hours.

With the general decree, Munich is issuing stricter corona rules for childcare than the Free State, the city emphasizes. The aim is to keep the risk of infection in day-care centers as low as possible and to increase the safety of children, their families and employees. “With the fixed groups we reduce the contacts within the care facilities considerably,” emphasizes Munich’s Third Mayoress Verena Dietl (SPD). This is intended to slow down the spread of corona infections in daycare centers. “We want to prevent even more drastic measures for families as far as possible. The protection of children, their families and the staff have top priority,” said Dietl.

In museums, cinemas, theaters, castles and at events, the 2-G rule is already in effect again, so only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered with appropriate evidence are allowed to enter. The 2-G rule also applies to Munich restaurants from Monday onwards, both outside and inside.

Meanwhile, numerous people in Munich want to be vaccinated – but many have been turned away by the vaccination centers without having achieved anything. According to the police on Friday afternoon, around 3:30 p.m., around 300 people were waiting in line at the vaccination station on Marienplatz, where 250 people who wanted to be vaccinated had to be turned away. “Many were understandably angry,” said a police spokesman on Sunday. Officials reassured people, there were no crimes.

In a total of 733 police checks in restaurants, hotels and service providers, the police issued only 13 reports and a warning for violations of the Corona requirements between Friday morning and Sunday morning.
