Munich bans climate protests on escape routes

The “Last Generation” has named Munich its “protest stronghold”. But now Bavaria’s state capital has reacted: It issued a partial ban on climate protests. At least escape routes should remain free in the future.

In the face of a multitude of “last generation” actions in Munich, the city has reacted with a partial ban on future protests. The city announced that a general decree would prohibit climate protests taking place on the routes of emergency and rescue vehicles in the future as a preventive measure to avert danger.

Accordingly, protests that are not reported and in which participants stick themselves to the road are prohibited. The decree came into effect on Friday at 12 noon and is valid up to and including September 12. This corresponds to the end of their protest in the Bavarian capital announced by the “Last Generation”, it said.

Blockades are said to have impaired emergency trips

The city justified the move by the activists’ “although theoretically clearable rescue lane” did not work as desired in practice. On Thursday, the activists of the climate protection group blocked traffic in Munich at more than twelve locations – two emergency vehicles were obstructed.

The protest of the “Last Generation” in Munich continued on Friday. According to the police, activists blocked traffic in the city again at several locations. The group had announced that they wanted to make Munich a “protest stronghold” in the run-up to the IAA mobility trade fair in early September.

Climate protest also on Sylt

Climate activists also protested in northern Germany on Friday. On Sylt, activists from the group “Stay on the ground” tried to get onto the airport site in penguin costumes. They temporarily blocked air traffic.

The group said they wanted to take a stand against the extreme injustice of private jets and air travel. According to the dpa news agency, the Hamburg-Sylt route is one of the busiest private jet routes in Germany.

Disguised as penguins, activists tried to block Sylt Airport.
