Munich: At Plänty Sandwiches there are vegans to go – Munich

Admittedly, Plänty Sandwiches in downtown Munich is not a classic breakfast café: there are only two benches inside, which most customers only use to wait for their orders, and there is only space for a mini beer bench set in front of the restaurant . A sumptuous breakfast is not really an option here.

In addition, the sandwiches, which, as the name of the shop suggests, are the focus of Plänty, are only offered from 11 a.m. onwards. If that’s too late for breakfast, you’ll have to make do with sandwiches and croissants. But for those who like to have breakfast later in the morning or prefer to combine breakfast and lunch at the same time, the Plänty at Altheimer Eck is the ideal address. Especially if he or she lives vegan or at least can and wants to do without animal products from time to time.

People who like to search for comparisons would probably argue that Plänty is a veganized version of the US sandwich chain Subway. However, the two operators Alexander Mehl and Tina Gumpp, who worked as accountants and tax consultants for a long time, have fulfilled a dream with the sandwich shop. And created an offer that they have so far missed in Munich: a place where you can quickly get something vegan to eat on the way to the office or during your lunch break. “At the bakery there was – if anything – only a pretzel or empty baked goods. That’s why we decided to make it ourselves,” they say.

What is there and how much does it cost?

The currently five sandwich creations play the leading role in Plänty, and a “Summer Special” is currently in the making. What the sandwiches all have in common is that they have plenty of toppings, are guaranteed to fill you up and – of course – are all vegan.

Highly recommended is the “Bängkok Crunch” with spicy organic sunflower mince on spinach, red cabbage kimchi, spring onions in teriyaki sauce, cucumbers, a jalapeño coriander mint pesto, roasted sesame and a cashew crunch in the classic style Baguette. Also very tasty is the “Dirty Harry” with vegan pulled based on pea and sunflower protein, homemade cole slaw, glazed onions, a jalapeño nacho “cheese” sauce, tortilla chips and a BBQ sauce in chili bun.

And then there is the “Just Näked” with roasted peppers on olive paste, rocket, tomatoes, herb pesto, vegan parmesan and cashew nuts, the “Uuuhh Captain” with a vegan tuna cream, leaf spinach, lettuce, cucumber, pickled radishes and spring onions and that “Säxy Caesar” with marinated vegan chicken, vegan mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes and vegan parmesan, optionally with truffle oil. All sandwiches are priced between 8.40 and 9.60 euros. Every Wednesday there is a special, which means that one of the sandwiches is slightly cheaper that day. These come one after the other, so that you have the opportunity to get each one at a discount.

If you can’t wait until 11 a.m., you can choose between a “Vutterbrezn”, i.e. a pretzel with vegan butter, i.e. margarine (1.80 euros), a “Vrischkääsebrezn”, a pretzel with vegan cream cheese (2 euros), or different filled rolls. Exactly what gump and flour as a vegan variant is still so often missing in conventional bakeries.

There are also, for example, chocolate brownies (3.50 euros), banana cake (3.50 euros) and banana and spelled muffins (3.90 euros) and croissants (2.20 euros) in the display case, although the brownie and the cake are still there should have been a little juicier.

The question of whether you would rather have your cappuccino (small 3.50 euros, large 4.50 euros) with cow’s milk or plant-based milk logically doesn’t arise at Plänty: you can get all coffee creations with oat milk.

With the currently warm temperatures, it is advisable to take a look in the large fridge at the entrance when choosing a drink. It contains a large selection of different cold drinks, for example Charitea (3.50 euros), Paulaner Spezi (2.50 euros) or Kombucha from the Yo Booch brand (4.50 euros).

who goes there

The Plänty not far from Marienplatz is a good address for anyone who needs refreshment before or after a shopping tour or who works in one of the surrounding offices and gets hungry on the way to work or in between.

You certainly don’t have to be a vegan to find what you’re looking for at Plänty, but those who eat a purely plant-based diet in particular must have longed for the corner shop to open at the end of March in the heart of Munich. Because: Vegan options are still the exception, especially in this part of the city.

The fact that there is hardly any seating in the Plänty doesn’t matter at all, especially in summer: you can make yourself comfortable on the steps of Rindermarkt, for example, which is only a few minutes’ walk away.
