In Mühlheim, police officers have been threatened by an armed man. There was an exchange of gunfire, and the man suffered life-threatening injuries. The exact circumstances are now being determined.

During an operation in Mülheim in the Ruhr area, the police shot a man and critically injured him. The officials were alerted on Saturday night about a stabbing near the main train station. When they got there, none of the suspected opponents were there, a police spokesman said on Saturday.

The emergency services had looked around in the area and became aware of a man at a nearby refugee accommodation. He held a knife and a severed bottle in his hand and threatened the police officers. “According to the current status, he approached the officers in a threatening manner with his weapons, so that the firearm was used,” said the public prosecutor’s office and the police.

The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. His personal details have not yet been clarified with certainty. Whether a police officer or several police officers shot and how many shots were fired must now be determined, said the police spokesman.

The officers had turned on their body cams during the operation. The investigators hope that the recordings will provide important information. The Bochum criminal police, who were not involved in the operation, have taken over the investigation in the case.
