Mini hope for Hofmann and Sommer: lightning comeback against Union?

Jonas Hofmann and Yann Sommer are on the mend – Gladbach may be able to fall back on the duo against Union Berlin at the weekend. Daniel Farke has at least a mini-hope.

Last week, Hofmann (ankle joint injury) and Sommer (torn ankle ligaments) were injured in Gladbach’s Cup-Aus in Darmstadt. At first, the fans and those in charge at Borussia even feared that the two top performers would lose the World Cup – fortunately it turned out relatively quickly that both Hofmann and Sommer could take part in the tournament in Qatar.

Whether and if so, how often the two can still appear for Gladbach before the World Cup has so far been in the stars.

Now there is such good news that there is even hope that Hofmann and/or Sommer could be available again this weekend against Union Berlin (Sunday, 3:30 p.m.). It would be a lightning comeback of the very first class.

Both players did not take part in team training on Thursday, but Daniel Farke was delighted with the recovery of his two stars. The Gladbach coach emphasized to the picturethat it is “a good sign” that Hofmann is at least back in running training.

“In the stories, it can quickly develop well from the feeling of pain that you make huge progress within 24 or 48 hours,” revealed Farke. “He [Hofmann] didn’t miss much, only a few days out, didn’t lose much substance. If he could take part in team training, it wouldn’t be like we had to build him up for three more weeks. Then he would be available again relatively quickly. Jonas is for a difference player.”

However, before there are too many expectations of Hofmann’s return against Union, Farke preferred to keep the ball flat. “He still feels something,” said the 45-year-old. “With every day that goes by, it becomes less likely that it might even become an issue again at the weekend.”

The situation is similar for Yann Sommer, whose ankle is still swollen – but according to Farke this is “actually a good sign”. Because: “That means that the healing is going well. The doctors said that sometimes it goes very quickly and within 24 hours the swelling goes down and there is no more pain.”

The Gladbach coach announced that there was of course a “mini-hope” for an assignment – overall, the chance that Sommer would return to the goal against the Iron was low.

Nevertheless: overall positive news that gives the impression that Sommer and Hofmann – should it not be enough against Union – can at least become a relay option again in the following game against VfB Stuttgart (4.11.).
