33 boats sunk in Hurricane “Otis” – sailors missing

Last week, Hurricane Otis hit the Mexican coast near Acapulco. The immense damage is only now slowly becoming visible. 58 people are still missing.

The hurricane ““Otis” has sunk at least 33 ships and boats off Mexico’s Pacific coast. A military ship equipped with a crane will soon begin salvaging the wrecks, Marine Minister Rafael Ojeda announced.

According to their relatives, dozens of sailors were on the boats when the hurricane passed through. According to the latest authorities, at least 46 people were killed in the storm and another 58 were still missing.

“Otis” hit the coast near Acapulco last week as a hurricane of the highest level 5 with sustained wind speeds of almost 270 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 330 kilometers per hour. In just twelve hours it had developed from a tropical storm into a dangerous hurricane.

Over 270,000 apartments and houses were damaged by the hurricane. In addition, 80 percent of all hotels in the tourism-dependent region around Acapulco were affected, the government announced.
