Material bottlenecks – mechanical engineers under pressure – economy

The situation is getting worse for mechanical and plant engineering. Material bottlenecks and a shortage of skilled workers are increasingly affecting the backbone of the German economy with over a million employees, explained Ralph Wiechers, chief economist of the industry association VDMA, on Monday. A quick improvement is not in sight. A quick survey of the 520 member companies showed that hardly anyone was expecting the situation to improve within the next three months. “Bottlenecks are particularly stubborn for electronic components. 44 percent see a better supply situation here only from the second half of 2023,” says Wiechers. 78 percent of the companies also complained about a “noticeable or serious” lack of staff.
