Star magician is said to have molested minors

16 women accuse David Copperfield of sexual misconduct. Some are said to have been under 18 years old at the time of the incidents.

He shrunk airplanes, slipped through the Great Wall of China, hovered over the Grand Canyon and made the Statue of Liberty disappear. He has been delighting millions of people with his spectacular shows since the 1970s. To this day, David Copperfield is considered one of the best illusionists in the world. But was he also deceiving everyone in his private life?

The US edition of the “Guardian” published extensive research on Wednesday, based on interviews with more than 100 people as well as court and police files – and made serious allegations against David Copperfield public. 16 women have accused the star magician of sexual misconduct – more than half of whom say they were under 18 at the time of the incidents.

In the article, two of the alleged victims independently describe how they were brought on stage at Copperfield’s shows as 15-year-olds and how he then gave them his phone number. Both had contact with the magician for months or years. He would have sent letters and gifts to women now in their 40s and, when they were older, had sex with them.

Other women claim that Copperfield touched them inappropriately during performances and behaved in ways that they now find inappropriate. Despite their young age, he actively sought contact with them. Three women accuse the now 67-year-old of drugging them before performing sexual acts on them to which they could not consent. The report notes there was no evidence that Copperfield knew the women’s exact ages. But there are indications that suggest this. The incidents are said to have spanned from the late 1980s to 2014.

Lawyers deny wrongdoing

Copperfield’s lawyers deny any wrongdoing by the magician and call the allegations against him “false and completely unfounded.” He “never behaved inappropriately, especially not towards minors.” In the statement, they admitted that the magician had a “consensual and legal sexual relationship” with one of the women after she turned 18.

The lawyers point out that Copperfield was never charged with a crime. Inappropriate behavior towards women is “the opposite of everything he stands for and works hard for.” The magician is a friendly and shy person who treats men and women “respectfully.” Drugs are “not part of his world.” The lawyers also emphasized that “numerous false allegations” had previously been made against Copperfield.
