In Mallorca in 2018, a serious accident occurred near Es Trenc beach. Now the process against the alleged perpetrator begins.

In Mallorca in 2018, two German tourists were seriously injured in an accident with a motor boat. The boat ran over her while diving. A then 20-year-old had an arm severed in the incident, and the doctors had to amputate a leg of his six-year-old companion, as reported by the “Mallorca Zeitung”, among others.

The accident happened around 300 meters from Es Trenc beach, which is popular with tourists, in the southern municipality of Campos on the holiday island. The two Germans are said to have been there with diving scooters. Possibly because they dived outside of the bathing area and did not mark their position with a buoy, the serious collision with a motorboat occurred, the occupants of which had obviously overlooked the two subsequent victims. The divers, in turn, would not have noticed the boat because they were below the surface of the water.

Six years imprisonment demanded after horror accident on Mallorca

The 20-year-old’s arm was severed at shoulder level, summarized the “Mallorca Zeitung”. Civil Guard officers searched for the severed body part late into the night, but only found it the following day. By then it was already too late to sew on the arm, they say. According to the report, the 26-year-old suffered such serious injuries that the doctors were unable to save his leg.

Now the trial against the boatman began in Palma. The prosecution is demanding six years in prison and two million euros in damages. The suspect is a police officer and husband of conservative politician Catalina Soler. She was on board when the accident happened.

According to the “Bild” newspaper, experts had confirmed and testified that the accused was driving at 20 to 22 knots, far too fast for an area where there are bathers. The now 51-year-old police officer admitted that he really did fly over the water and explained that he could not see the divers. He regrets what happened and also apologizes for his actions.
