Lost Places in Tyrol: Roberto Blanco visits the creepy hotel Berwanger Hof

Once upon a time there was a grandiose alpine hotel where stage stars like José Carreras and Mario Adorf came and went: the Berwanger Hof in the Tyrolean town of Berwang, west of the Zugspitze – and not to be confused with the four-star hotel of the same name, which is located in Obermaiselstein is located in the Allgäu.

The hotel complex with its alpine rustic chic of the 1970s once belonged to Margot Werner. The dancer, singer and entertainer, who was born in 1937 and died in 2012, is best known to older television audiences. The highlight of her career is her appearance at the New York Metropolitan Opera Ball.

In the meantime, the Berwanger Hof, which has been vacant for years, has experienced several changes of ownership. The latest owner, the Austrian property developer Almdorfbau, who calls themselves “market leader and partner for solid wood chalets”, wants to breathe new life into the property and turn the buildings into a suite and spa hotel.

“Up there the lights should go on again”

One of the prominent supporters of the renovation project is pop star Robert Blanco, a contemporary witness and former guest of the house as well as a colleague of the diva. Together with the Almdorfbau boss Johannes Arneth, both recently inspected the property.

For Dietmar Berktold, the mayor of Berwang in Tyrol, it is important “that the lights come on again up there,” he recently told the newspaper “Tiroler Tageszeitung”. For the purchase and renovation of the Berwanger Hof together with the hunting lodge and the Alpenrose house 40 million euros are estimated.

“Related to the tradition of the golden years of Berwang and the Grand Hotel of that time, Roberto Blanco will accompany our project as a godfather with advice and action,” says Almdorfbau.
