The famous travel guide Lonely Planet has published an anniversary edition for its 50th birthday. There are no German targets to be found there. There were other surprises.

He is one of the most famous travel guides in the world. If the If Lonely Planet recommends a travel destination as particularly worth seeing, tourism is booming there. For the 50th anniversary, the best tips for the next year have been collected in a series: the so-called “Best in Travel 2024”.

The bad news for the German tourism industry right away: While in recent years Dresden, Freiburg or Hamburg were among the top cities, Bavaria was among the best regions or even Germany itself was voted the second best travel destination in 2019, we are going this year completely empty. Not a single German city or region can be found on the five top lists. But there are lots of surprising newcomers.

Travel 2024: Surprising winners at Lonely Planet

This is how Kenya’s capital Nairobi manages to leave famous city destinations such as Paris and Montreal behind – and take first place among cities. The African metropolis is “now finally fulfilling its claim to status as a global cultural center,” says the travel guide. Above all, the great gastronomy scene is highlighted.

There is also an unexpected first place among the countries: Mongolia is the most exciting travel destination according to the Lonely Planet. It offers “expanse, adventure and culture,” according to the guide. Morocco, Uzbekistan and Croatia are also among the countries most worth traveling to.

Great destinations in neighboring countries

Among the financially particularly attractive trips – listed under “Top 10 worth money” – is Germany’s neighboring country Poland, which impresses with its gastronomy and nature. The trip on the Austrian night train Nightjet is also praised.

Among the less surprising destinations is Spain, which is ranked among the best sustainable destinations. The Czech capital Prague, famous for its beautiful architecture, is among the top cities. And Tuscany in the most beautiful regions.
