Local round: two bars and lots of champagne – Munich

The pandemic has hit nightspots and bars particularly hard; Pearls like the Ménage Bar on Buttermelcherstrasse or the Contemporary Bar on Münchner Freiheit no longer exist. But new things grow again. Whereby it is sometimes not possible without a certain continuity. There would be for example Justin Leone. The top sommelier, who once worked at Tantris, wanted to set up his own upscale grill and wine restaurant Bottles & Bones a few years ago at Schwabinger Tor (where the Alpe-Adria-Restaurant Portun has now moved). Nothing came of the plan because of Corona, but now the native Canadian, who grew up in Chicago, will be starting his own wine bar from next week. Sticks & Stones that’s what he calls it, and it’s not that far away from his former place of work, the Tantris, namely on Clemensstraße. The hallmark of Leone, who used to be the bass player with the rock band Three Minute Miles toured the USA is the combination of pop music and wine expertise. He will also demonstrate both in his new bar. “Thanks to a special technology, we have more than 500 wines on tap,” he promises (Sticks & Stones Weinbar, Clemensstraße 7, Thursday to Monday, from 6 p.m.).

The Juliet Rose Bar The Hotel Hilton Munich City has been there since 2018, but now has a new head barman. Michael Fritzen is not a normal bartender, he can even call himself “General Manager”. The cocktails taste even better. After training in Dresden and stations in Aachen, Bonn and Baden-Baden, Fritzen is now responsible for the bar in Munich and enriches the bar’s program with various events with live music and DJs as well as after-work parties in the open air (Juliet Rose Bar in the Hilton Munich City, Rosenheimer Straße 15, daily 12-1 p.m., phone: 48 04 87 17, www.julietrosebar.com).

“Typically Munich,” some will say, “ordinary wine fairs are probably no longer good enough for them.” You can perhaps see it that way, because whoever organizes such a trade fair is of course also looking for the right place for it. The fair 100% champagne gathers in any case more than 200 champagnes from more than 50 producers from this region; on Sunday it is also open to end customers (100% Champagne, MTC world of fashion Munich, Ingolstädter Straße 45 and 47, Sunday, July 2, 1-6 p.m., 79 euros per person, www.100prozent-champagne.de).
