LIVE – Iran’s attack on Israel: EU plans to expand sanctions against Tehran

Here is what to remember this Tuesday evening on the situation between Israel and Iran:

◾ The Israeli army has declared that Iran will not emerge “unscathed” after its unprecedented attack on the Jewish state. “Israel cannot stand idly by in the face of such aggression,” said IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari, assuring that “firing 110 missiles directly at Israel will not go unpunished. We will respond when, where and in the way we choose.”

◾ The United States and the European Union have warned in separate statements that they are preparing to strengthen their sanctions against Iran. “I expect that we will take additional sanctions against Iran in the coming days,” US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Tuesday. “The idea is to broaden the existing (sanctions) regime against Iranian drones,” declared the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell.

◾ Hezbollah announced Tuesday the death of three of its members in Israeli strikes in Lebanon, from where the powerful Lebanese formation supported by Iran launched attacks on northern Israel. An Israeli army plane “eliminated Ismail Youssef Baz, the commander of Hezbollah’s coastal sector,” the Israeli army confirmed in a statement. Later in the evening, the Israeli army announced the death in an airstrike in Kfar Dounine, in southern Lebanon, of Mohammed Hussein Moustafa Shechory, presented as the commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan forces in charge of rockets and missiles in central and western Lebanon, and Mahmoud Ibrahim Fadlallah, another fighter of the movement.

◾ Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Israel and Iran to “restraint” during an interview with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raïssi, warning of the “catastrophic consequences” of any further escalation.

◾ The British airline easyJet, which announced yesterday the suspension of its flights to Tel Aviv for a week after the attack carried out by Iran against Israel, indicated today that these connections would ultimately remain suspended until the end of October .
