Getting on board one evening in Paris and waking up in Venice will no longer be possible by train. Thello, a subsidiary of the Italian public railway company Trenitalia, announced the closure on July 1 of the two lines it operates in France, the Paris-Milan-Venice night train and the Marseille-Nice-Milan link. .
The night train, whose circulation had been suspended since the start of the health crisis on March 10, 2020, will not resume. As for movements on the Marseille-Nice-Milan line by day train, they “stop definitively on July 1, 2021”, according to the company. The last train from Milan to Nice will run on June 29 and the last Nice-Milan on June 30, according to the Thello website.
High speed as a horizon
In Rome, the parent company Trenitalia had indicated in October – when the CFDT had announced the company’s intention to close Marseille-Nice-Milan – “to be in a transition phase, with a much larger project, the great speed in France ”.
Thello must launch high-speed trains, in the fall depending on the profession, on the Paris-Lyon-Milan line, facing the TGV of the SNCF.
