Kronenhalle in Zurich: the main thing is that there is no change – style

Go with the times, adapt, be a trendsetter? The legendary “Kronenhalle” in Zurich, which is almost a hundred years old, has a different recipe for success: nothing must change. Never. About famous regulars, art and favorite tables.

“Where else in the world can you sit under an original Henri Matisse still life with oysters and eat fresh oysters?” This is how the Zurich publisher Daniel Kel summed it up. The founder of the Diogenes publishing house was one of countless well-known regulars at the Kronenhalle. He took all of his famous authors, from Patricia Highsmith to John Irving to Patrick Süskind, to the restaurant on Zurich’s Rämistrasse, where he always sat at the “Joyce table”, a table for four to the right of the entrance. The director Federico Fellini also insisted on sitting there every time he visited. For him, however, it was the “Picasso table”, after the self-portrait of the painter “Peintre au travail”, the original of which hangs there. Just two of many examples that explain why the Kronenhalle, which opened in 1924, is still an icon today. In any case, there are very few restaurants that offer you that Name dropping make it so easy.
