Königssee: Conservationists call for bobsleigh run – Bavaria

The Federation of Nature Conservation in the Berchtesgadener Land does not want to rebuild the ice channel on the Königssee that was destroyed by the heavy rain. Instead, he suggests turning it into a “monument to the effects of the forces of nature”.

The track record is 48.803 seconds – about at least, because the fourth decimal place is unfortunately no longer shown. In any case, the luge athlete Felix Loch set the track record at the World Championships at the end of January, and probably nobody will beat this record anytime soon. Because after the night of July 17th to 18th, Loch only needed slightly longer to share a photo of the bobsleigh and toboggan run on the Königssee on social media, which was largely in ruins after a heavy rain. Loch could certainly do without the record more easily than the railway, but now there is an organization that wants to secure the record for all eternity: The Bund Naturschutz in Berchtesgadener Land has clearly spoken out against the reconstruction of the ice canal.

The BN will probably not make it onto the podium in the Berchtesgaden valley basin, and if it does, then at most one to debate. Experience has shown that the BN district group places less value on award ceremonies and audience prizes anyway, instead it usually wins in the end before the administrative court. As far as the bobsled run is concerned, others have decided much more quickly: They will do everything to rebuild the run, it was said almost reflexively immediately after the devastating heavy rain, and not only by the district as the owner, but also by, among other things Prime Minister Markus Söder. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who wasn’t quite as coming at the time, stood by and didn’t say no.

The local BN was the first and only one to really say no, and by no means just to make itself unpopular again. After all, the Klingerbach had caused considerable damage to the railway as early as 1975, the official geohazardous atlas showed a great risk of landslides for large areas above, an insurer had not been found for the system years ago and such a railway was a climate-damaging energy guzzler aside from that. On the other hand, the world’s first artificial ice rink is not open for the time being, but somehow it is still there. However, the BN also has a suggestion for re-use: It could be turned into a “monument to the effects of the forces of nature”.
