Figure skater Kamila Valiyeva has to reckon with the fact that the medal ceremony in Beijing will be canceled for her. This was announced by the Olympic Sports Committee. If the legal process is completed, the honor could be made up for.

The doping scandal surrounding figure skating prodigy Kamila Valiyeva is not without consequences. If the Russian wins another medal, there will be no award ceremony at the Winter Games in Beijing, the executive of the International Olympic Committee decided on Monday shortly after the 15-year-old European champion was given the go-ahead by the sports judges. If gold favorite Valiyeva places in the top three, there will be neither a flower ceremony immediately after the competition nor a medal ceremony, the IOC said.

The International Court of Arbitration for Sports had previously rejected the IOC’s appeal against the lifting of Valiyeva’s provisional ban by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency. Your positive doping test from December only became known shortly after the Olympic team competition, which the Russians had won ahead of the USA and Japan. As a result, the ceremonial presentation of medals to the teams was canceled. The IOC has now decided that it should no longer be made up for during the Beijing Games.

Medal ceremony should be made up in a “dignified way”.

It was “inappropriate” to hold a medal ceremony with an athlete who tested positive for doping in the A sample, but whose doping offense has not yet been finally determined. Because of the unresolved situation in the doping affair, the IOC called on the World Skating Union (ISU) to allow 25 instead of 24 participants for the final women’s freestyle, provided Valiyeva qualified for it.

According to the IOC, the medal ceremonies should be made up for in a dignified manner as soon as the sports law procedure for Valiyeva has been completed.
