Lots of rain, plenty of sun and exceptionally warm – this is how June of this year can be summed up. In parts of Germany, temperatures rose to more than 36 degrees.
Sunny, rainy and warm: June had a bit of everything and with an average temperature of 19 degrees it was the third warmest since temperature records began in 1881.
With this average, June was 3.6 degrees above the value of the internationally valid reference period 1961-1990, said a spokesman for the German Weather Service after a preliminary evaluation of the more than 2000 measuring stations. Compared to the current and warmer comparison period 1991-2020, the deviation was 2.6 degrees.
Even at night temperatures over 20 degrees
Especially in the second third of the month, the first heat wave of the year made people in Germany sweat a lot: In Berlin-Tempelhof and Baruth, south of it, the thermometer climbed the highest on June 19, each time 36.6 degrees.
Bad Kreuznach, southwest of Mainz, had eight hot days with temperatures of more than 30 degrees. Some DWD stations reported tropical nights: In Berlin-Marzahn, Berlin-Tempelhof and Lindenberg, further south-east, there were four nights each when the temperatures did not drop below 20 degrees at night.
In contrast, the DWD station in Deutschneudorf-Brüderwiese in the Ore Mountains recorded its lowest value on June 1, at 0.5 degrees.
Lots of violent local thunderstorms with heavy rain
With around 95 liters of precipitation per square meter, June 2021 clearly exceeded its target precipitation of 85 liters per square meter for the reference period 1961-1990. Compared to the period 1991-2020, the increase was even just under 20 liters. Local thunderstorms, however, were mainly responsible for this, some of which were extremely violent and were often accompanied by heavy rain, but also hail and heavy squalls.
The conditions in the affected areas were sometimes catastrophic. The highest daily volume reported on June 23, Nürtingen-Reudern, southeast of Stuttgart, with 115 liters per square meter. Overall, the largest amount of precipitation fell in Upper Swabia and the Bavarian Alps, sometimes more than 250 liters per square meter. In the greater Berlin area, central Brandenburg and the Uckermark, on the other hand, barely five liters per square meter were measured in some places.
The sun was seen in abundance: with around 260 hours, the duration of sunshine in June 2021 exceeded its average of 203 hours by 28 percent. It was particularly sunny on Rügen as well as on the Western Pomerania coast with sometimes more than 330 hours of sunshine. In North Friesland and the central low mountain range, on the other hand, only around 210 hours of sunshine were reported locally.
