The 77th Cannes Film Festival comes to an end with the awards ceremony. The Golden Palm went to a director from the USA.

The Golden Palm of the Film Festival Cannes goes to the US director Sean Baker for his film “Anora”. This was announced by the jury.

Other award winners:

French director Coralie Fargeat won the award for best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival. Her body horror film “The Substance” stars Demi Moore and deals with images of beauty in a drastic way.

Fargeat thanked her leading actress Moore on stage and said: “The film is about women and what women still have to go through in the world.” She thanked all women who are raising their voices and said: “I really think we need a revolution and I don’t think it has started yet.”

A shared prize for musical actresses

Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón shares the award for best actress with Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz. All four play roles in the musical “Emilia Pérez” by Jacques Audiard. Normally the award is only given to one person. 52-year-old Gascón is the first trans woman to receive the award in Cannes. The film tells the story of a Mexican cartel boss who undergoes gender reassignment surgery to become a woman and then wants to atone for past crimes.

The Iranian director Mohammed Rassulof was awarded a special jury prize. The filmmaker, born in 1972, recently fled Iran, where he had been sentenced to several years in prison. It was unclear for a long time whether he would come to the film festival.

His film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” tells of the protests in Iran following the death of the young Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. The situation in the country is told through the tensions in a family.

The 77th Film Festival comes to an end with the presentation of the Golden Palm and other awards. The closing gala will be hosted by French actress Camille Cottin.
