Joko and Klaas play drunk at the limit of humor in “New Year’s Eve for One”. Unfortunately, that’s not enough for a new tradition.

Traditions are important. This is probably one of the reasons why people have been watching “Dinner for One” every New Year’s Eve for years. Runs up and down that day and every time butler James stumbles on the tiger, it’s kind of amusing. Joko and Klaas have lost their last “Joko and Klaas against ProSieben” show and therefore had to, were allowed to, should re-shoot “Dinner for One”. The only difference is that for trademark protection reasons it shouldn’t be called like that but instead “New Year’s Eve for One”. But otherwise everything should be as true to the original as possible, from the black and white set to the mask that painted the skin of the two strangely gray to achieve the black and white effect. That alone was somewhere between funny and strange and made sure that you at least wanted to keep looking.

Amateur acting with Joko and Klaas

Let’s put it this way: Stumbling over the Stofftiger worked. Joko as James and Klaas as Sophie gave everything to create the impression that they were taking a beating in the style of “Dinner for One”. Is it plausible that the two of them really pour wine, bubbly and negronis into themselves while they are shooting? Of course not. But my goodness, it’s New Year’s Eve, one more time in the corona pandemic and a little laugh and exaggerated cheerfulness doesn’t really bother anyone. We deserved a bit of lightness in these dreary times.

So let’s celebrate the festivities as they happen and get involved in this spectacle, in which two men act out in an amateurish way how they believe that drunks behave, while the producers of this spectacle, Thomas Schmitt and Jakob Lundt, pretend they are despair of their stars. Perhaps the most beautiful quote of the evening came from Thomas Schmitt: “Let it run, it will be thrown in the trash before it gets to the editing suite.” is almost entertaining again. To call it funny would be an exaggeration, but yes, there was a chance to smile.

Pig panda and lamps on

Moderator Steven Gätjen made you dream of the pig panda, he looked so strange with the gray make-up on his face that left out the eye area. For the producers, Steven was supposedly the “glimmer of hope”, but somehow he is in every moderation that concerns Joko, Klaas and him. One in three simply has to be less crazy than the rest. Of course, “New Year’s Eve for One” became a Tour de Force because Joko and Klaas, once let off the leash, simply did what they wanted. “I’ve got the lights on,” complained Klaas, and only then did Thomas Schmitt come up with the idea of suggesting “maybe exchange the alcoholic drinks”. As if nobody had thought about it beforehand or if actor Freddie Frinton, who played butler James on “Dinner for One”, got really drunk at the time.

“Drink up, I want to fuck”

Heufer-Umlauf did not want to make “a murder pit” out of his heart and admitted: “I am really a bit pissed off.” But this is how an onake actually plays a lot better. A bit of mumbling here, a bit of loud laughter there, in between seemingly desperate producers, zap, 30 minutes up. “Drink up, I want to fuck”, Klaas ended at some point “New Year’s Eve for one” and the two left the studio holding hands. Bye then too.

According to Thomas Schmitt, it was a “sad day for the entertainment industry” after the shooting was over. Oh, that’s how it goes, if you look at the year 2021 as a whole, then TV Germany has produced a lot more crap than this harmless sketch at the end of the year. Will “New Year’s Eve for One” be the “same procedure as every year”? Probably not. But the making of, which will definitely be there for this show, is definitely worth a little laugh in the coming year as well.
