When the art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon was declared persona non grata by the Cambridge University Debate Club last November because he had imitated Adolf Hitler’s style of speaking in a lecture there, John Cleese canceled his own appearance there: He himself had already done so impersonating Hitler, “so I’m going to blacklist myself before anyone else does,” co-founder of comedy group Monty Python said at the time. He apologized to anyone who hoped to speak to him, “but maybe you could find a place where no woken rules apply.” The Cambridge Union Society later withdrew Graham-Dixon’s permanent invitation as excessive.
