Jeff Bezos’ yacht “Koru” in the USA: ship too big for marina

There was only enough space in the harbor next to oil tankers: Jeff Bezos’ mega yacht “Koru” is a giant even in the USA

The “Koru” is the largest sailing yacht in the world – and at 127 meters long, it is definitely a challenge for many ports. Of all places in the USA, the “Koru” could not dock next to the other yachts.

In May, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos finally receives his “Koru”. He ordered the yacht in 2018, but it took five years before he was finally able to raise anchor. After the huge ship was freed from the dock at the shipyard in Rotterdam, it headed south. It seems that the yacht, including its crew and owner, spent most of the summer in the Mediterranean. The position transmitters were switched off for quite a while, so not all routes can be viewed on relevant sites.

The “Koru” has now completed its longest journey to date. Because on November 9th she set course from Gibraltar for the United States – and arrived there last week.

But even in the land of unlimited possibilities, there seem to be limits, as the industry portal “Luxurylaunches” reports. Accordingly, the “Koru” obviously could not dock next to the other yachts, but is currently in the industrial part of the Port Everglades harbor.

Mega yacht “Koru” has to be moored next to oil tankers

Instead of lying next to yachts like the “Man of Steel” or the futuristic “Excellence” and being among her peers, the “Koru” is waiting for her next voyage next to the oil tankers “Hafnia Kallang” and “STI Texas City”. At least: The passengers of the cruise ships “Eurodam”, “Silver Shadow” and “Rhapsody of the Seas” have a very good view of the huge schooner because they are also in the immediate vicinity.

The shadow ship of the “Koru”, the “Abeona”, is now lying a long way further south in the harbor basin. The “Abeona” (you can find out more here) usually sails together with the “Koru” and carries everything that does not fit on board the sailing ship – be it a helicopter, numerous watercraft or parts of the crew and even guests.

It is not the first time that the gigantic dimensions of the “Koru” have forced special treatment. Its construction was already more complicated at the time, as the height with masts would have made it impossible to leave the Rotterdam harbor basin without dismantling a bridge. After a long dispute over the “De Hef” bridge, it was decided to initially lay the “Koru” without masts and to complete it elsewhere.

Jeff Bezos pays $2,900 a day in fees

Thanks to a publicly viewable price table, you get a small insight into the costs incurred when yachts like the “Koru” and the shadow ship block two berths at the same time. The 127-meter (417-foot) yacht costs around $2,400 a day. The price is so high because the “Koru” is too big for the port’s yacht rates and has to pay based on length. For the “Abeona”, which is significantly smaller at 75 meters (246 feet), an additional 507 US dollars are added every day. Without moving the ships, they cost a total of 2,900 US dollars. Every day.

In principle, however – in these spheres – these are comparatively low costs that are incurred for operation. It is said that maintaining a yacht costs around ten percent of the purchase price annually. The “Koru” is expected to cost up to $500 million. Calculated on a daily basis, that would be a daily expenditure of $137,000. In addition, there is the “Abeona”, which, with an estimated purchase price of 75 million US dollars, also costs around 20,500 US dollars. In total, the two ships could cost over $150,000 each day.

But for Jeff Bezos this is definitely possible for a while. With an estimated fortune of $163 billion, he could theoretically operate the fleet for 2,977 years – assuming no other expenses are added, which is of course completely unrealistic. The calculation is only intended to show that it clearly does not drive the Amazon founder to ruin.
