Jean-Luc Godard, director of “A bout de souffle” and spearhead of the New Wave, is dead

French cinema would certainly not have been the same without him. Jean-Luc Godard, who first started out as a critic for Cinema notebooks before realizing in 1960, Breathlessfilm that became the cornerstone of the New Wave, is dead, announcement Release this Tuesday. He was 91 years old.

The Franco-Swiss director leaves behind him a major work, made up of films that have joined the Pantheon of the Seventh World Art such as Contempt Where Pierrot le fouand more experimental feature films, via film-essays, a furrow he dug in the 1980s.

Honored at the biggest festivals, from Berlin to Venice via Cannes, with prizes rewarding his entire career – the last was awarded to him in 2018 on the Croisette – he had refused the National Order of Merit in 1981. “I don’t like to be ordered around, and I have no merit,” he said at the time.
