Watch the video: Draghi wins vote – but will he stay in office?

STORY: The Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has won the vote of confidence he demanded in the Senate – but it is unclear whether he will remain in office. On Wednesday evening, 95 MPs supported the speech that the 74-year-old had previously given and in which he had sworn to unite his previous government partners. 38 MPs voted against. However, numerous parliamentarians did not take part in the vote: Draghi’s three major coalition partners Lega, Forza Italia and 5 Stars had declared shortly before the vote that they would not take part. In doing so, they effectively torpedoed Draghi’s plans. After the announcement by the three parties that they would not vote, observers said it was very likely that Draghi would resign in view of the disagreement. Draghi plans to speak to President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday. Draghi has governed for a year and a half with a multi-party coalition. His alliance would still have a majority even if the 5 stars were eliminated. But the former head of the European Central Bank has insisted that his coalition must represent a broad political spectrum.
