Italy – Coalition threatens to fail – Politics

The Italian government threatens to fail in a vote of confidence on Thursday. The Five Star Movement, which is part of Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s coalition, announced late on Wednesday evening that it would not take part in the Senate vote. Party leader and ex-Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told reporters the government should do more to tackle societal problems. Other parties had previously announced their exit from the government should the Five Stars leave the coalition. There was initially no reaction from Draghi. He had recently declared that he would not lead a coalition without the participation of his partner. If the five stars leave the government, he will resign. Some members of the Five Star Movement are calling for this very step because of a dispute over a draft law on aid funds related to the war in Ukraine. Draghi has led the coalition since February 2021.
