More than 50 people have died from adulterated liquor in the Indian state of Bihar. It is not the first case: Poor people in particular resort to poisonous booze in India, where alcohol is sometimes banned.

At least 53 people have died after drinking adulterated liquor in India. A special police team has begun investigating the case in the northeastern state of Bihar, local police said.

Some people would continue to receive medical treatment. The first victims were hospitalized on Tuesday with stomach cramps, vomiting and blurred vision.

Raids have been carried out throughout the Saran district over the past two days, a government official told NDTV. More than 4,000 liters of alcohol were confiscated. 126 suspected dealers were arrested.

Alcohol ban since 2016

In the state of Bihar, the consumption, sale and production of alcoholic beverages have been banned since 2016. In India, hundreds of mostly poor people die every year because they drink adulterated liquor. This is cheaper than commercially made ones, but often contains methanol or other substances that can cause severe poisoning.
