Anyone who believes that the diesel scandal, CO2 limit values or even a late understanding are responsible for the shift towards electromobility is underestimating the influence of the Chinese market on the automotive industry. Volkswagen sells 40 percent of its vehicles in China, BMW only sells more vehicles in Europe than in the People’s Republic. When large SUVs were the trend a few years ago in the world’s most populous country, German manufacturers vied for who could offer the most luxurious model. Then China switched to vehicles with electric motors and the German manufacturers had to follow suit. Too late in many cases.
