Michael Verhoeven’s family have confirmed that the director has died aged 85.

Due to the unexpected death of filmmaker Michael Verhoeven, Bayerischer Rundfunk is changing its program.

After the unexpected death of Michael Verhoeven (1938-2024), Bayerischer Rundfunk honors the director and long-time husband of actress Senta Berger (82). As the state broadcaster announces, there will be short-term program changes on BR television and radio.

“A filmmaker with attitude”

“He was a filmmaker with attitude who dealt intensively with topics such as repression, guilt and aspects of German history that had not been dealt with,” said a statement. This Friday, April 26th, BR television will be showing the report “Michael Verhoeven – Actor, Director, Troublemaker” from 10:05 p.m.

On April 27th, Verhoeven’s television film “Let’s go!” will be shown at prime time at 8:15 p.m., in which Alice Dwyer (36) and Maxim Mehmet (48) can be seen, among others. After a new “BR24” broadcast at 9:45 p.m., one of Verhoeven’s most famous works will be shown. From 10 p.m. the station will show “The White Rose” from 1982, in which Lena Stolze (67) plays the resistance fighter Sophie Scholl (1921-1943).

Both “Let’s go!” and “The White Rose” will also be available in the ARD media library until May 27th, and “Michael Verhoeven – Actor, Director, Troublemaker” will be available until May 3rd. On Saturday afternoon there will also be “One on One. The Talk: Daniela Arnu in conversation with Michael Verhoeven” on the radio at Bayern 2 from 4:05 p.m. The conversation from 2010 can also be heard in the ARD audio library.

“He was my great hero”

Simon Verhoeven (51), the older son of the director and actress, had, among other things, on Friday the Munich “Abendzeitung” confirmedthat his father died at the age of 85. “My dad was the most loving, funniest father a child could ask for,” Verhoeven said, among other things. “And a brilliant, courageous filmmaker. A world collapsed for me. He was my great hero and always will be.”
