Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wants to have a referendum vote on the controversial LGBTQ law. In a video published on Facebook, he asked for approval.
The law prohibits publications that are accessible to children and depict non-heterosexual relationships. It also bans advertising in which homosexuals or transsexuals appear as part of normalcy.
The EU Commission initiated infringement proceedings against Hungary because of the law. It threatens the principle of equality and respect for human dignity. These are fundamental values of the EU, the authority justified its decision, and one will therefore use all available instruments to defend these values. Infringement proceedings can lead to actions before the European Court of Justice. Many EU states also criticize the law as discriminatory.
Hungary, however, rejects the allegations against the law. From the government’s point of view, it only ensures that parents alone can decide how they want to organize the sexual upbringing of their children.
