Hot flashes: New medication does not contain hormones

Many women develop hot flashes during menopause, which can be very annoying. The new drug Fezolinetant prevents the symptoms where they arise: in the brain. The hormone expert Petra Stute has already prescribed the drug – here she reports on her experiences.

Petra Stute has a problem. The hormone expert repeatedly encounters patients in her consultation who she cannot help: women who suffer from severe hot flashes but are not allowed to take hormone preparations – the usual treatment for these menopausal symptoms. That’s about to change, thanks to the new active ingredient fezolinetant. Stute, who works at the University Women’s Clinic at the Inselspital Bern in Switzerland, was able to prescribe the new drug before it was launched on the market in Germany.
