White sails, lots of music and millions of people in a party mood: Tonight the Kiel Week begins with a big program on land and on the water – and with good traditions.
After two slimmed-down variants during the corona pandemic, the city is again expecting an audience of millions. The final preparations for the official starting signal have been completed at and in the town hall. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck opens Northern Europe’s largest folk festival tonight on the Rathausplatz. In front of thousands of spectators, he will sound the maritime “cast off” signal “long-short-short-long” with the ship’s horn. The so-called glazing of the opening ceremony – three double strikes and one single strike of a ship’s bell – is carried out by Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther. We broadcast the opening tonight from 7.30 p.m. on ndr.de/sh, in the NDR SH app and here on the site live in the video stream.
Culture, sport and ships
There will be around hundreds of events up until June 26th – including music, sports, culture and cabaret. 4,000 sailors want to take part in the regattas of the Olympic and international classes. Kiel’s Lord Mayor Ulf Kampfer will give the starting signal for the sailing regattas at 1 p.m. in the Sailing Arena in the Schilksee Olympic Center. In addition to the sailors, there are many large ships to admire. Numerous naval ships from different countries have been in Kiel’s Tirpitzhafen since Friday. Around 100 tall and traditional sailing ships can be seen at the windjammer parade next Saturday (June 25). For the first time since 2015, the parade will be led by the German sailing school ship “Gorch Fock”.
NDR program: Lots going on on the stage at the town hall
In addition to the attractions on the water, the Kiel Week offers an extensive entertainment program on land. NDR Schleswig-Holstein, N-JOY and NDR 2 bring many stars onto the stage at the town hall – and ensure a real concert marathon. The stage program of NDR 1 Welle Nord and Schleswig-Holstein Magazin offers live acts in the open air on three evenings on the Rathausmarkt – including Joris and Peter Widereck (Tuesday, June 21 from 7.30 p.m.), tribute band RePolice and JOE (Sunday, June 19 from 7:15 p.m.) and Tiffany (Saturday, June 25 from 8:10 p.m.). The opening night last night belonged to NDR 2 and N-JOY, who presented a small festival together. These included: Namika, Malik Harris, Ray Dalton and Glockenbach with Special Guest Clock Chlock.
Play desired: “Mysterious Bird World”
The highlight for all children is of course the colorful play line on the Krusenkupplung. Open-air hands-on activities await around 57,000 square meters. Under the motto “Mysterious Bird World” this year everything revolves around a colorful bird world. All age groups have the opportunity to create their own fantasy world. As always, the little ones can also try their hand at being craftsmen. Boards, screws, staples, sheets, tablecloths and paint – everything is ready.
