The 21-year-old defender was named player of the game when his Detroit Red Wings defeated the Winnipeg Jets 7-5 (3-1, 2-2, 2-2). “Thank God we had him tonight,” said Detroit head coach Derek Lalonde after the game, which he was overall dissatisfied with. “It was maybe our worst performance of the year.”
Seider, who also shone with four blocked shots, said: “I think I’m playing a lot more defensively this year. I’m getting better and I’m finding the right times to get involved in the offensive.” With two goals and 15 assists in 39 games this season, Seider is below the statistical figures from last year, when he was the first German to be named the NHL’s best rookie.
The evening was also successful for the other two Germans playing in the NHL. National goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer won with the Seattle Kraken 4: 3 at the Buffalo Sabers, where John-Jason Peterka was not used. For Grubauer it was the first game of the new year and the first win since mid-December. He saved 32 shots on goal. Nico Sturm scored his tenth goal of the season as his San Jose Sharks beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-2.
