Heavy rains and strong winds kill two people

Bad weather continues to devastate Europe. Two men were killed by heavy rain and strong winds across Bulgaria on Saturday, adding to 16 deaths from Storm Ciaran on the continent this week.

A 51-year-old man died when a wall collapsed on him in the village of Razvigorovo, near the eastern town of Shumen, the Interior Ministry said. The second victim is a 67-year-old man from the town of Veliki Preslav, in the same region. He reportedly stepped on a damaged electrical cable while bringing his sheep home during the storm. Two of his animals were also killed in the accident.

The city of Devnya in a partial state of emergency

A woman was also hospitalized after being injured when a tree collapsed on her in a public garden in Shumen. Hundreds of firefighters, rescuers and police responded to the damage in Bulgaria.

In several regions, the storm damaged roofs and brought down trees and electricity poles, causing power outages in several dozen villages. The eastern city of Devnya declared a partial state of emergency following the storm.

The new bad weather comes just two months after four people died in torrential rains that flooded part of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, cutting bridges and stranding thousands of tourists.
