Health: Microplastics in food are not the biggest problem in the kitchen

Consumers often misjudge health risks. Great risks lurk, especially in the kitchen. Mark Lohmann from the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment explains.

Mr. Lohmann, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has just published its current consumer monitor. In it you ask which health risks consumers in the country fear most. What’s at the top of the worry list?
The consumer monitor is a representative survey that we always conduct in February and August of each year. 66 percent of the population is currently concerned about microplastics in food, some even very concerned. This puts the issue ahead of concerns about antibiotic resistance, pesticide residues and genetically modified foods.
