Harry Belafonte, American singer and civil rights activist, is dead

Harry Belafonte, a great African-American singer nicknamed “the king of calypso” who had distinguished himself in the fight for civil rights, died Tuesday in New York at the age of 96, several American media announced.

An emblematic artist of an era, he mixed West African, Caribbean and New York influences to create music that was a great success. The one who was also an actor had become a major activist for civil rights and had linked up with Martin Luther King.
