Matter of mind: Handball players need mental strength against Hungary

The German handball players are under enormous pressure in the fight for the European Championship semi-finals. We have to win against Hungary. This should also be possible without short-term mental support from an expert.
After the error festival of the German handball players against Austria, the groundbreaking European Championship duel will take place Hungary is a top priority for the DHB selection. Mental strength is required this Monday (8.30 p.m./ZDF and Dyn) in order to maintain the chance of reaching the semi-finals with a win.
Despite the enormous pressure situation for national coach Alfred Gislason’s team, those responsible did not seek a sports psychologist before the game. “We are not taking any action,” said DHB sports director Axel Kromer.
However, every player is free to seek advice independently. “Most national players have access to a sports psychologist in their private or sporting environment. If someone needs it now, they have the option of calling them and getting advice,” said Kromer.
The German Handball Association worked with sports psychologist Hans-Dieter Hermann in preparation for the home European Championships. The 63-year-old has been working mentally for the German national soccer team since 2004. “We had a very good meeting with Hans-Dieter Hermann, but I don’t want to overestimate his role. This is certainly not present for every player when he enters the hall,” said Kromer.
According to the 47-year-old, no mental miracles can be expected in the short term anyway. “No one comes to give a lecture to the national team and gives the players the key according to the motto: You have to do it the same way,” said Kromer and confirmed: “And no one comes when things aren’t going well and leaves them Players are running over hot coals so that they can win games again.”
