The most important staple food for people in Germany has become massively more expensive in recent years. The prices for bread and rolls rose by 34.4 percent from 2019 to 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
Similar to other foods, the price increase for bread and rolls was above average. For comparison: Overall consumer prices rose by only around half as much at 17.3 percent between 2019 and 2023, while food prices as a whole – like bread and rolls – rose by 34.4 percent.
The Federal Office explains that consumers have to pay so much for baked goods in particular with increased costs for energy and raw materials as well as rising personnel costs.
The good news from a consumer perspective: Recently, the price increase for bread and rolls has slowed significantly. In March 2024, baked goods cost 2.9 percent more than a year earlier, while overall consumer prices rose by 2.2 percent during the period.
