“Half a lion” by Johannes Herwig: What are we actually doing here? – Culture

Leipzig in the early 1990s, a few years after the events of the peaceful revolution. In Johannes Herwig’s new novel Halber Löwe, the southern part of the city is the territory of 15-year-old Sascha and his three buddies – young people who lack any confidence in a future full of blossoming landscapes. Her life is rough, there is no room for self-discovery, for reflection. The first-person narrator Sascha only seems to come to his senses for a few moments, for example when he leaves a bouquet of flowers at his father’s grave on behalf of his mother and remembers the bad experiences of his early childhood.
