The accident occurred directly on the Playa de Palma: According to initial reports, at least four people died on Thursday evening when parts of the restaurant and bar “Medusa Beach Club” in El Arenal collapsed. Around 30 people were injured, reported the news agency DPA, citing local rescue services (read the continuously updated report on the topic here). According to local media, some of them were in critical condition. The identity of the victims was initially unknown. The area is particularly popular with German tourists.
Holiday season starts in Mallorca
Rescue workers arrived in large numbers at the building on the promenade between “Ballermann 1” and “Ballermann 2”. According to the Spanish newspaper “El Pais”, they were prepared for lengthy work. People were said to be buried under rubble. According to “El Pais”, the first floor collapsed down to the basement. There was no information about the possible cause of the accident.
The bar must have been very busy, as the holiday season on Mallorca is currently picking up speed. The official opening of the “Medusa Beach Club” was planned for Saturday evening, but it was already open at the time of the accident.
